LIVE ONLINE - the Survival Skills TALK SERIES

NEXT PRESENTATION: CORNERING & fixing cornering problems Wed 6 July 2022

AFTER junction collisions, cornering is where most riders come to grief, and it's not just inexperienced novices either - many riders with years of experience get cornering seriously wrong too.

The vast majority of rider training talks about how to corner 'properly' but rarely discusses the reasons that riders make mistakes. And that means when errors happen, they tend to come out of the blue and involve a rider with no 'get out of trouble' strategy.

A still clipped from the West Midlands 'Right the Right Line' video shows a rider on very much the wrong line.

A key element of the Survival Skills cornering courses is to go beyond building good cornering skills by also looking at cornering errors - where, how and why they happen. And then we look at what we can do to either avoid the error if we possibly can, or how we can get out of trouble if we find ourselves in a mess.

In this webcast, I'll use my background both as a courier and instructor to discuss both how the common mistakes happen, but also give you a range of strategies for dealing with them.

This is YOUR CHANCE to see a LIVE WEBCAST from the author of the 'Science Of Being Seen' presentation.

SURVIVAL SKILLS HISTORY - Run by BTEC-QUALIFIED rider coach Kevin Williams, Survival Skills Rider Training is one of the UK's LONGEST ESTABLISHED INDEPENDENT post-test motorcycle rider training school. Survival Skills offers real-world and relevant training to riders at all levels of ability from newly qualified to experienced.

"I launched Survival Skills Rider Training back in the spring of 1997 after realising there was a need for a different style of post-test training that wasn't aimed at developing a specific riding style to gain an advanced test pass, but instead catered for what we now call 'client-centred training', where the needs of the trainee are prioritised. Since then, I have delivered Survival Skills to approaching two thousand riders of every level of ability from newly-qualified to off-duty police riders."

Survival Skills courses aim to help you understand:

  • WHY errors happen (ours and someone else's)

  • HOW they happen

  • WHERE they happen

and CRUCIALLY:

  • WHAT TO DO to AVOID getting into trouble whenever we can, and HOW TO GET OUT of trouble when that proves impossible.

PRESENTER - Kevin Williams MSc - inveterate biker, serial writer, scientific thinker... rider coach, safety advocate, speaker, creator of 'Science Of Being Seen' (SOBS) Kevin is an independent BTEC-qualified rider coach with an NVQ in online training. With the benefit of a research-based Masters degree, Kevin's work to improve riding standards has always had a strong science background. Kevin has worked with thousands of riders since 1997, acted as a consultant to the TRL on rider training investigations, and served with several UK-based road safety projects, including Bucks County Council's 'Be a Better Biker' scheme, Somerset Road Safety Partnership's innovative multi-format 'Rider Skills' days at Castle Coombe circuit, and the KFRS 'Biker Down' sessions and their Brands Hatch-based 'Ride Skills' days. Kevin's skills are internationally recognised as his participation in the New Zealand 'Shiny Side Up' rider safety initiative shows.
